Shrove Tuesday

In the Christian calendar, this is the day of feasting before Ash Wednesday. It’s a day when people enjoy rich, fatty foods and sweet treats, such as pancakes, in preparation for Lent.

As you can see Y2 thoroughly enjoyed the feast this morning!

Art Project – Part 2

After creating a colour pallete we individually painted the background of a sea and skyscape. We then used our observation skills to draw The Endeavor using different materials such as pencil, charcoal and graphite.

We then worked collaboratively to create a tie dye of the ocean. The material was folded, twisted and scrunch and then tie with elastic band before dye was added. We look forward to seeing the finished product!

Art Inspiration – Yinka Shonibares ‘Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle’

Our Art Project this half term was focused around ocean.

Firstly we created a colour wrap using magazine, papers, wool, fabric and ribbon to reflect the sea and skyscape of a calm and tranquil voyage or a frightening and stormy voyage.

Next we mixed colours to create a palette of ocean colours dependent on time of day and weather. Here we discussed how the sea and land or sea and sky meet on the horizon. These paintings will form the background of ‘The Endeavor’ later in the project.

To be continued…

ACE Designers

This week we have designed and made bridges. Using the Leeds Bridge and the Howrah Bridge as inspiration we looked at key design features before drawing our own. We then worked in small groups to consolidate our ideas before finalising the design.

We aimed to be as accurate as possible with our measurements to ensure our bridges were strong and sturdy. We then measured and sawed dowel to create the frame.

ACE Cooks

Today we have been busy making a vegetable curry. We thought carefully about the method, the equipment we might need and the ingredients before heading to the cafe to get cooking!

Firstly we washed and prepared the vegetables. We peeled and sliced the carrots, chopped the celery and diced the onion.

After that, we heated the pans with some oil before adding in the onion, garlic and ginger to gently cook. Next we added in the curry powder, stock and chopped tomatoes to begin making the sauce.

Then we added the vegetables including peas to the sauce and left it to simmer for about 20 minutes until the vegetables had softened.

Lastly, we served it with rice and tasted it. As you can see lot’s of happy faces enjoying the curry. It went down a treat!

Kolkata – The City of Joy!

What an AMAZING fortnight we have had in the Art Studio!

We have been looking at the seasons and weather in the United Kingdom and India. We learnt that the United Kingdom has four seasons and India has SIX! We focused specifically on the Monsoon season. Miss Patchett worked with the children to create a dance to represent the strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Each day we checked the weather forecast in both Leeds and Kolkata, we found out that rainfall is depicted by blues and temperature by reds. This is when we discovered that India is wetter and warmer than the United Kingdom. We recorded this in our paintings.

Together we looked at how symbols are used to show the different types of weather experienced. This is when we were introduced to the weather ‘sleet’ and understood the term ‘intervals’ when used with sunny. Each child then created their own symbols. These designs were then made into batik using hot wax and dye.

We then produced an impressive skyline using collaborative collages of buildings found in Kolkata. We carefully sketched the buildings using pencil making sure we captured the key features such as arches, spires and domes.

Once our observational drawings were complete we used maker pens and oil pastels in the colours of the Indian flag to enhance the details.

We worked collaboratively to organise everybody’s drawing to create the Kolkata skyline.

And I am sure you will agree, the result was incredible!

Lastly, a huge thank you to everybody who joined our celebration. It really was a wonderful afternoon showcasing all of 2Ds hard work.

Anti-Bullying Week 2022…

In our PSHE lesson this week we discussed what makes somebody a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others.

As this week is Anti-Bullying week‘, we thought about what bullying looks like and what we should do if we see somebody being unkind to somebody else or if a person is unkind to us.

In preparation for our KS1 anti-bullying picket, we enjoyed making our own posters. We showed lots of enthusiasm this afternoon when using these in our own picket although we may now have some sore throats!

Lots of us also came to school wearing odd socks for Anti-Bullying week.

Amazing Artwork…

We thoroughly enjoyed our art project today and what beautiful work we produced!

After reading the story ‘The Spider Weaver‘, we were inspired to create our own ‘wondrous web’ just like the one that the characters saw in the story.

We began by experimenting with different techniques using the oil pastels including: hatching, cross hatching, drawing zig-zag and dashed lines. This then helped us when it came to creating our own webs. To help us, we looked at some photos of spider webs and imitated the designs.

We then used the water colour paints to add a wash to the background. We used green as in the story, the web that the characters found was in a banana tree.

We then added some more details to our webs using the oil pastels before adding sequins. To finish, we used the running stitch to add some texture to our designs.

Our webs are all unique just like the webs that spiders create and how amazing they look!

ACE Mathematicians…

In Maths, we are thinking about numbers to 100. As well as reading and writing 2-digit numbers in numerals and words, we have been thinking about the value of each digit. We know that 2-digit numbers are made up of some tens and some ones.

We have been resourceful, just like Helpful Hen, and have used the practical equipment to help us partition different numbers into tens and ones.
