Kolkata – The City of Joy!

What an AMAZING fortnight we have had in the Art Studio!

We have been looking at the seasons and weather in the United Kingdom and India. We learnt that the United Kingdom has four seasons and India has SIX! We focused specifically on the Monsoon season. Miss Patchett worked with the children to create a dance to represent the strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Each day we checked the weather forecast in both Leeds and Kolkata, we found out that rainfall is depicted by blues and temperature by reds. This is when we discovered that India is wetter and warmer than the United Kingdom. We recorded this in our paintings.

Together we looked at how symbols are used to show the different types of weather experienced. This is when we were introduced to the weather ‘sleet’ and understood the term ‘intervals’ when used with sunny. Each child then created their own symbols. These designs were then made into batik using hot wax and dye.

We then produced an impressive skyline using collaborative collages of buildings found in Kolkata. We carefully sketched the buildings using pencil making sure we captured the key features such as arches, spires and domes.

Once our observational drawings were complete we used maker pens and oil pastels in the colours of the Indian flag to enhance the details.

We worked collaboratively to organise everybody’s drawing to create the Kolkata skyline.

And I am sure you will agree, the result was incredible!

Lastly, a huge thank you to everybody who joined our celebration. It really was a wonderful afternoon showcasing all of 2Ds hard work.
